Brief: Design a concept for use in a clinical environment to reduce patient anxiety during dental procedures. Project undertaken as a team to create a friendlier interface between the dental care industry and the public by exploring virtual dentistry, self-care and education. Engauge is a stress ball filled with a tactilely satisfying non-Newtonian fluid. It consists of an adjustable finger module, which contains an LED and photo detector for heart rate variability and GSR components to measure skin conductance. This information is shared live with the dentist via Bluetooth to allow the patient to communicate their anxiety levels without the need for speech. Engauge was designed to not only aid in the control of dental anxiety, but also to help reduce it. The information obtained would then be used to create a database to improve the quality of relationship between patients and their dentists.
